I am having trouble to run PechaMaker in combination with the newest Wine and Ubuntu versions. It worked before. I hope you are familiar with Linux. Usually fonts are installed in the /home/user/.fonts folder to be accessible for one user. System wide fonts are installed in /usr/share/fonts. Fonts should actually not be copied here manually. Also one should actually not install fonts manually in /usr/share/wine/fonts. In wine one should install them in /home/user/.wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts.

So, I tried and actually installed the fonts in each of these places and rebuilt the font cache with "fc-cache -f -v" and also performed a reboot. Nothing works. PechaMaker will always start with the error that the TibetanMachine fonts are not found.

I tried with both font versions 4.80 and 5.0.
I tried to run PM in Windows XP and Vista mode.

Do you know a fix (I do use virtual machines but Wine is more convenient)?

P.S. although I prefer Unicode, I believe that people who know about Unicode should also be able to work without. There are many conversion tools available. Also the Tibetan Translation Tool can be fed with Unucode, Wylie and other font types and gives out Tibetan Machine code. So it isn't necessary to have the PechaMaker use Unicode (but it sure would be a great feature).

I have a problem concerning the gap between the lines - the line spacing options. The first line is the tibetan text in tibetan, the second line is the text as it is pronounced in german in latin characters and the third line is the translation into german, of course in latin characters too.

The space between the tibetan text and the pronounciation I was able to make smaller so it looks nicer and does not need so much space. But the problem is the space between line 2 and 3, which is too big.

Could you help me with this problem?

Thanks a lot!

1) Fixed the "drift" on Pecha Height when closing the Style tab in Pecha Layout Controls.

2) If you are running a Windows 7 machine:
If you downloaded PechaMaker before September 28, 2010 then you probably got lots of warnings about the wrong TibetanMachine font version. (Because the PM installer installed the wrong font version on Win7 machines.)

If you are on a Win7 machine and you get lots of warnings about the wrong font then just install PM 2.6 and click OK when it asks if you want to overwrite the TibetanMachine font set. (NOTE: On Sept 28, 2010 the installer was updated for version 2.5; so you may not have seen this issue.)

You can see a list of all the changes in the release notes here.

Thanks to Vicente for pointing this out!

I updated the installer to fix that and put it on the downloads page today.
(Only the installer changed; PechaMaker is still at version 2.5)
I believe PechaMaker works well on Windows 7.

DETAILS:
I have just discovered that the Uniscribe (usp10.dll) version that is installed on your machine will affect text display even for programs that do not support Unicode. Apparently usp10.dll overlays the low level system calls that draw the text and for some reason Microsoft decided to stop drawing glyphs for character codes 129, 141, 143, 144, and 157. Each of the TCC font files makes use of one or more of those codes. Those glyphs could disappear within any program, it all depends on which usp10.dll version is being loaded by that program.

Most non-Microsoft programs, including PechaMaker, are affected by the usp10.dll that is in the WINDOWS\system32 folder. It would be rare that some system or application update would change that usp10.dll file; but it could happen. To make sure PechaMaker continues to show all glyphs, you could copy (not move) the WINDOWS/system32/usp10.dll file into the PechaMaker install folder. You would do this before applying any Microsoft updates.

I tested this on several different programs and editors, on all of them the usp10 version affected the display of those glyphs. On the other hand, the TCC fonts are the only ones I know of that use those char codes; it would not be likely to see this problem on any other typeface. On Vista systems, the stock usp10.dll already has this change so any programs that are designed for Vista will already have some way to deal with this.

*I realize this is kind of technical but it took me quite a while to understand what's going on; maybe this post can save someone some frustration. The change seems to be VERY low level because it affects ExtTextOut(), TextOut() and even DrawText(); for both the A and W versions.
